Last week Hamish Ogston was invited back to his former school, Salisbury Cathedral School, to be guest of honour for the annual prize giving ceremony.
Hamish met with pupils, parents and staff of his old school throughout the morning, before also visiting the cathedral’s stone works yard, where Hamish Ogston funded apprentices are carrying out restorative work under the agreement with the Cathedrals’ Workshop Fellowship.
During the school’s prize giving ceremony, Hamish spoke to the audience of pupils, parents and staff about his life experiences and presented the end of year prizes.
After the ceremony, Hamish’s hot air balloon was inflated in the grounds of the school, so pupils were able to enjoy a tethered flight which created a memorable event for all those in attendance.
In the afternoon, Hamish visited the onsite stonemason’s workshop at Salisbury Cathedral, meeting with some of the Cathedrals’ Workshop Fellowship students, who since 2021 have been supported by funding from the Foundation.
This included apprentice stonemason Joe O’Connell, who is currently studying at Level 2 in preparation for completing the CWF Foundation degree in Applied Historic Building Conservation and Repair, and Matt Barton, who completed this qualification in March 2022. Joe, Matt and Hamish discussed progress on projects, such as a baluster which showcases different masonry profiles and demonstrates the many skills developed on the course.
