Supporting snakebite antivenom research

Hamish has previously supported research initiatives that will ultimately provide the evidence base for future changes in health policy and practice. He is keen to provide research opportunities for the next generation of worldwide health professionals who are working towards improving health outcomes for the disadvantaged.

Research opportunities have focused on supporting early career health professionals throughout the UK and the Commonwealth. The funding has included small grants or unique PhD programmes which include partnerships with some of the UK’s leading research institutions and partner institutions in Africa.

Hamish has previously supported research initiatives in areas as wide-ranging as infectious diseases, hypertension and snakebite antivenom.

In 2023, Hamish committed over £1.75 million to health projects around the world across four different continents. More recently, his focus has centred around a global hypertension awareness and education programme, and continued actions to reduce the incidence and impact of snakebites across India.

Many of the world’s most serious public health challenges - from preventable conditions such as hypertension to neglected emergencies like snakebite - continue to cause unnecessary suffering, particularly in low-resource and underserved communities. In many cases these issues are not rooted in a lack of knowledge, but a lack of access, infrastructure, and sustained investment.
